Palestinian University in Gaza

“Israel blows up another university in Gaza”,
Middle East Monitor, 18 January 2024

“The IOF occupied the university building for 70 days, turning it into a military base and a centre for sniping isolated civilians in the areas of Rashid Street, Al-Mughraqa and Al-Zahra, as well as a temporary detention centre for interrogating Palestinians, before detonating it.”

– The administration of the Israa University in Gaza

Under international conventions, universities are inviolable objects. A military attack on a university is a war crime.

The only exception can be when university buildings are used for military purposes.

However, this university was used for military purposes by its attacker, Israel itself, which later blew it up.

The university was converted into a concentration camp, and then they got fed up and destroyed it.

It would be interesting to know what happened in the Philosophy Department of that university.

Were any prisoners of war executed there? Were prisoners of war interrogated and tortured there?

Were Camus’ or Sartre’s treatments of the absurd read there?

Who knows.

It is the first time I have heard of a university being turned into a concentration camp.
